Cremation Urns

Below are some things to consider when buying cremation urns. We will add to this list on occasion. Please send us any suggestions for items to include.
Size of the Urn:
All of the adult cremation urns that Prestige Memorials sells are large enough to accommodate any person. But there are a few points worth knowing: first, the amount of cremated remains is not a function of a person's body weight or height. The amount of ashes a person displaces varies according to any number of other factors. Most cremation urns should be at least 170 cubic inches. Urns for infants and children should be at least 30 cubic inches.
Material Considerations:
If cremation urns are to be buried or displayed outside, we recommend using cremation urns made of natural material such as granite or marble. We do not recommend metal cremation urns if the urn is to be placed in a burial vault. Also, metal cremation urns, even if kept indoors, are likely to tarnish slightly over time. Applying standard metal cleaners on occasion will help keep the metal finish looking like nice.
Storage Considerations:
Most cremation urns will serve nicely as an attractive storage place in their own right. But, if you plan to bury ashes, you will probably need an urn vault. Many cemeteries, in fact, require urn vaults for all urn burials. Urn vaults come in a variety of materials, but some cemeteries insist on the use of concrete, which we recommend against. The best materials for urn vaults include marble, plastic, stainless steel, bronze and fiberglass. Prestige Memorials has a wide selection of urn vaults that will meet your cemetery's environmental guidelines. Urn vaults cannot be engraved, but an engraved plate can be attached to the outside of almost any vault.
Transfer of Ashes:
Prestige Memorials does not have the facilities to transfer ashes to cremation urns. Your funeral home will usually provide this service, so long as it is provided both the urn and the remains.
Engraving:
Engravings are possible on some, but not all, cremation urns. If the material or design of the urn will not allow engraving, you can almost always attach an engraved plate to the outside of the urn.
