There are guidelines which need to be followed when traveling with cremains. The TSA - Transportation Security Administration has come up with regulations in regards to traveling with cremains. Those guidelines where created after 9/11 because airline security needed to be more enforced and stricter.
Regulations for Airline Travel
There are two options for carrying a crematory container with you on your flight (this is provided to us by the TSA):
- Carry-on: You are allowed to carry-on a crematory container, but it has to pass through the x-ray machine. If the container is made of a material that prevents the screener from clearly being able to see what is inside, then the container will not be allowed through the security checkpoint.
- Checked Luggage: You could transport the urn as checked baggage provided that it is successfully screened. TSA will screen the urn for explosive materials or devices using a variety of different techniques; if cleared, it will be permitted as checked baggage only.
- Airline Restrictions: Some airlines do not allow cremated remains as checked baggage so please check with your air carrier before attempting to transport a crematory container in checked baggage.
The TSA suggests that you purchase a temporary or permanent crematory container made of a lighter weight material such as wood or plastic that can be x-rayed.
